A Dialogue of Time, Culture, and Playfulness
Lyla & Spencer · April 26, 2025 · Keeler Tavern Museum, Ridgefield, Connecticut
A wedding shaped by history, handmade details, and cultural connection — intimate yet expansive, and marked by a playful moment where a grand sword met the smallest of cakes.
A 1940s vintage dress, handmade rings, and a quiet but unmistakable connection across cultures.
From the very beginning, Lyla and Spencer’s wedding felt layered — not in an ornamental way, but in meaning. Lyla wore a true 1940s vintage gown, elegant and timeless. The rings they exchanged were made by Lyla’s own hands, carrying a sense of care and intention that felt deeply personal. Their Ketubah — a genuine antique — quietly set the tone for a ceremony rooted in Jewish tradition, rich with symbolism and history.
Spencer teaches Chinese at a private school in New York, and both he and Lyla had lived in China. That lived experience subtly shaped the day — not through overt references, but through a sensibility. The celebration felt like a conversation: between cultures, between generations, and between different moments in time. It was intimate in scale, yet expansive in spirit.
What stood out most about Lyla and Spencer is their warmth. They are, quite simply, kind people — the type whose presence puts others at ease. There’s an ease to them, paired with a shared sense of humor and a curiosity about the world that makes time around them feel lighter.
That spirit came through most clearly during one unforgettable moment of the evening. Instead of a traditional cake-cutting, Lyla and Spencer approached the table holding an oversized ceremonial sword — dramatically large, gleaming — and used it to cut not a grand cake, but two tiny cupcakes. The contrast was perfect. Guests laughed, cameras came out, and the moment felt like a wink — playful, self-aware, and entirely them.
After the wedding, they sent a note filled with warmth — an invitation to share Henan noodles, spicy chicken, and roujiamo together in the city one day. Much like their wedding, it was humble and heartfelt. The kind of gesture that lingers quietly in your memory, leaving you already looking forward to the next time paths cross.
