06.12.2026 Bethany & Grant

With Shakespeare as Their Witness

Bethany & Grant · [Wedding Date] · The Delacorte Theater, New York, NY

Bethany and Grant’s Delacorte Theater wedding in New York City was shaped by the things they love most—their dogs, their neighborhood, the people closest to them, and Shakespeare. Their celebration moved through New York City and ended onstage at The Delacorte Theater in Central Park, with the cast of Romeo & Juliet as witnesses.

A Wedding Built Around What They Love

Bethany and Grant found each other through their shared love of books, and especially Shakespeare. When they planned their wedding, they chose not to follow a traditional ceremony-and-reception schedule. Instead, they let their everyday life, the people closest to them, and a performance of Romeo & Juliet shape the day.

Their Delacorte Theater wedding in New York City began quietly at home with their two dogs. Bethany’s dress, Grant’s suit, and many of the small details they chose felt as though they belonged in a film from another time. Nothing felt overly polished or chosen only for the wedding. Everything felt personal.

A Familiar Route on a Different Day

Before heading to Central Park, we stopped at a bar near their home. Inside was a pinball machine they had played many times before. It was a small stop, but one filled with memories from their life together.

On the way to the subway, Bethany suggested a game: how many strangers would say congratulations before we arrived?

Grant guessed 20. Bethany and I both thought it would be much more.

A few minutes later, several teachers walked past us with a kindergarten class. One child after another called out congratulations, and Grant’s 20 was gone almost instantly.

Bethany and Grant take the New York City subway all the time. But that day, dressed for their wedding, the familiar platforms, trains, and streets felt different. We photographed as we walked and rode, letting the city remain exactly what it had always been around them.

Small Things Made With Care

By the lake beside The Delacorte Theater, Bethany and Grant gathered with only their closest family and friends. They cut their favorite cake from From Lucie and shared their favorite wine.

They had also made tiny matchboxes for their guests. Every one was different, created from images clipped from old printed pieces and carefully arranged by hand. They spent an entire evening making them together.

I kept thinking about that evening—the two of them sitting side by side, cutting and arranging the small pieces, talking as they worked. That quiet time together may have been one of the most romantic parts of the entire wedding.

The Most Fitting Witness

Bethany and Grant did not plan a traditional reception or wedding dinner. Instead, they chose to spend the evening watching Romeo & Juliet at The Delacorte Theater.

I was fortunate to watch the play with them. Since having children, an evening at the theater has become a rare experience for me, which made sharing this one even more memorable.

At the end of the performance, the cast invited Bethany and Grant to the center of the stage. There, surrounded by the actors, they held a brief wedding ceremony while the entire theater applauded and cheered.

Shakespeare was part of how they found each other. On their wedding day, his work became part of how they began their marriage.

It is hard to imagine a more fitting witness.
